We Need Your Help: Get Dallas Families in Need Online Now
Dear [Lawmaker],
I am concerned about families across Dallas that are struggling to get and stay connected to high-speed internet. For far too many, household income and inadequate access to digital tools and skills continue to create barriers to connectivity. It's time to close the digital divide in our community. The Dallas City Council has a historic opportunity to use federal funding to help every unconnected family get online for good, but one plan under consideration is to have Dallas build and operate its own duplicative, multi-million dollar internet network - a costly and inefficient approach that will: - Put MILLIONS of our tax dollars at risk - DISTRACT from the city’s biggest priorities like funding for teachers and education, roads, water systems, and public safety - Delay broadband adoption, leaving families who need help NOW unconnected Dallas deserves better. High-quality internet is already available to 98% of Dallas residents. We can use these existing networks to connect Dallas residents in a matter of weeks, not years. That's why I urge and your colleagues to throw out the plan to spend public funds on a duplicative municipal broadband network and instead: 1. Stop the pursuit of an ill-advised plan to spend public funds on a duplicative, city-owned broadband network that will waste taxpayer funds. 2. Partner with existing internet service providers to connect residents where the cost is a barrier. 3. Adopt a digital navigator program to ensure families in need can take advantage of federal voucher programs like the Affordable Connectivity Program. 4. Provide computers and tablets to families in need. 5. Fund digital skills training programs for families and seniors. We have a remarkable opportunity to ensure every Dallas resident is connected, but it only works with the right solution – one that best protects taxpayer dollars while quickly connecting our neighbors. Thank you for your hard work and focus on these important issues.
Sincerely,
